23 July 2018 - Washington, D.C. - A month after the Vatican suspended Cardinal Theodore McCarrick from ministry, saying the prominent former D.C. archbishop had been credibly accused of sexually abusing a teenager decades ago, four additional complaints about sexual misconduct by the cardinal have surfaced. Once a representative of the Catholic Church worldwide and one of the architects of the church’s policy on sexual abuse, McCarrick’s precipitous fall over the past month has shocked Catholics, especially in Washington, where he was a popular archbishop from 2001 to 2006. Red Mass is a tradition that is held the Sunday prior to the Supreme Courtís opening session. The service gives special prayers for the court and the judges as they start hearing this session's cases. This mass is special in that the new Chief Justice, John G. Roberts, Jr. was in attendance along with his wife Jane. First lady Laura Bush was in attendance as well as United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, presides over mass and then walked out of the church at the end of the ceremony and stood on the steps next to President Bush and Chief Justice John Roberts.
