Governor-elect Kristi Noem (Republican of South Dakota) waves to the crowd after being recognized by United States President Donald J. Trump during the National Thanksgiving Turkey Pardoning Ceremony in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, DC on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.  According to the White House Historical Association, the ceremony originated in 1863 when US President Abraham Lincoln's granted clemency to a turkey. The tradition jelled in 1989 when US President George HW Bush stated "But let me assure you, and this fine tom turkey, that he will not end up on anyone's dinner table, not this guy -- he's granted a Presidential pardon as of right now -- and allow him to live out his days on a children's farm not far from here.
